How to prepare for your first bike tour?

Why we recommend La Régalante for beginners.

Do you fancy trying a cycling holiday but don't know where to start?
This is a question we often hear at the Moulin de Babel.
Do you need to be sporty? Which route should you choose? How many kilometres should you plan for? How should you organise the stages? What should you pack?
If we had to recommend just one route for a first experience, we would gladly suggest La Régalante, and particularly the section between Mont-Saint-Michel, Fougères and Vitré.
Why? Because it combines everything you look for in a first walking tour: accessible stages, varied landscapes, simple logistics, and enough discoveries to make you want to set off again.

How to prepare for your first stress-free cycling tour

One of the most common mistakes when preparing for your first cycling trip is wanting to go too far or for too long.
Three days are more than enough to experience vagrancy.
The goal isn't to cover hundreds of kilometres, but to learn to travel differently: pack your panniers, find your rhythm, cycle for several days in a row, and enjoy the journey as much as the destination.
This formula is just as suitable for solo travellers as it is for couples, families, or even those wishing to travel with their dog.

A first day to find your feet

When preparing for your first cycling trip, many questions arise: will the bike be comfortable? Are the panniers properly fitted? Have I packed everything I need? Will the children be able to keep up?
It is for this reason that we often recommend dedicating the first day to a stroll towards Mont-Saint-Michel before setting off on your tour.
This outing allows you to discover the bay while getting to grips with cycling and the equipment.
In the evening, travellers find the comfort of the gîte. It's an opportunity to adjust the saddle height or handlebar position if necessary, to check the contents of the saddlebags, or simply to ask any final questions before setting off.
The next day, the itinerant life begins with more confidence and serenity.

Why La Régalante is ideal for a first cycling tour

La Régalante links Mont-Saint-Michel to Nantes for nearly 275 kilometres.
However, it is not necessary to travel the entire route to appreciate its spirit.
In our opinion, the section between Mont-Saint-Michel and Vitré is one of the best areas for discovery for a first-time experience.
In just three days, it allows you to discover the Bay of Mont-Saint-Michel, the Couesnon marshes, the Breton countryside and two of the most beautiful medieval towns in Brittany: Fougères and Vitré.
Few itineraries offer such diversity over such an accessible distance.

Three days among the most beautiful facets of La Régalante

The first day allows you to discover Mont-Saint-Michel and its bay by bike. Between the Couesnon marshes, the polders and the vast horizons, the scenery is already exceptional.
On the second day, the route gradually moves away from the bay to reach the Breton countryside. The landscapes change, small country roads gradually replace the wide maritime expanses, and we reach Fougères, dominated by its impressive medieval castle.
The third day allows you to reach Vitré via what is often considered one of the most pleasant sections of La Régalante.
The route largely follows an old railway line converted into a greenway. The path is smooth, comfortable and largely separated from road traffic, making it particularly suitable for beginners.
As the miles go by, you cross a peaceful countryside dotted with ponds, small woods, old stations, and villages where it's good to take a break.
After a day on greenways and country paths, arriving in the medieval city of Vitré is a magnificent conclusion to a first journey.

Family bike tour: a cycling trip accessible to all

This formula works particularly well for families who want to try out itinerancy without immediately embarking on a long journey.
We offer bicycles suitable for touring, as well as all the necessary equipment for comfortable travel: waterproof panniers, luggage trailers, and travel accessories.
Families can also enjoy quality child trailers, reclining child seats allowing the little ones to nap en route, or tow systems for young cyclists.
Travellers with their dogs are not forgotten, thanks to our trailers specially designed for them.
This range of equipment allows you to discover bikepacking in reassuring conditions, even when travelling with young children or a pet.
Practical organisation: train, bikes, luggage and return from Vitré
Logistics is often what holds people back when they want to get started.
At the Moulin de Babel, we've brought together cottages and a bike rental service in one place to simplify your organisation.
For travellers arriving by train, we can arrange bicycle delivery to Pontorson station and transport for your luggage to the gîte.
We also offer discounts of up to 20% on bike hire for guests arriving by train and staying for at least two nights, depending on the length of their stay and the number of bikes hired.
And above all, it is not necessary to return to the starting point.
Vitré has a TGV train station, making it easy to reach Rennes, Paris, and many other destinations. We can also collect bicycles upon arrival.
The idea is simple: arrive by train, enjoy a first day of trial around Mont-Saint-Michel, then set off on a journey and return from Vitré without having to worry about the return trip.

The hardest thing is often to leave

Most people who discover bikepacking have a lot of questions before they set off.
Then, after a few kilometres, they often realise that the hardest part wasn't the pedalling.
It was simply daring to try.
La Régalante is an invitation to slow down.
And the stretch between Mont-Saint-Michel, Fougères and Vitré is probably one of the best places to discover, for the first time, the joys of cycling.
Three days are enough to experience a real trekking adventure, learn to travel differently, and know if you want to set off again.
And often, once you've had a taste of that freedom, an idea starts to sprout: to continue the adventure a little further next time.
